How to Become a Certified Driving Instructor
Certification Process
Before becoming eligible for paid instruction, all instructors must complete a certification process designed to ensure they are fully equipped to train students effectively. The process typically takes 3 to 6 weeks but must be completed within 2 months to maintain eligibility.
The certification includes a $200 upfront investment for the 30-hour online education course, which covers driving laws, safety procedures, instructional methods, and defensive driving techniques. This online portion provides essential knowledge on how to train new drivers, ensuring instructors understand state requirements and best practices.
In addition to online coursework, instructor candidates must complete 10 hours of classroom observation, 8 hours of in-car instruction observation, and 8 hours of supervised in-car instruction. These steps help future instructors gain hands-on experience before they begin teaching independently.
Once all requirements are met, candidates must submit their documents to the Department of Public Safety (DPS) and pass a written, vision, and driving test with a minimum score of 80%. Upon certification, instructors will be fully qualified to provide one-on-one driving instruction and help students develop safe driving habits.
